⇒ (to be, exist) in an incipient state:

- in an embryonic state (stage).

     ♦ Эти политические тенденции существовали в зародыше ещё двадцать лет назад. These political tendencies already existed in an embryonic state twenty years ago.

2. уничтожать, душить что в зародыше [obj-compl with уничтожать etc (obj: abstr or collect)]

⇒ (to destroy sth.) in the earliest stage of its existence, before it has time to develop:

- nip sth. in the bud;

- squelch sth. at its very outset;

- (in limited contexts] smother sth. in its crib;

- strangle sth. at birth.

     ♦ ...Настоящие учёные и научные результаты, хотя их и было ничтожно мало, не переходили ни во что и с намёками не считались. Их следовало уничтожить в зародыше (Зиновьев 1). ...The true scientists and their results, although there were distressingly few of them, were not transformed into anything and paid no attention to any hints. So they had to be nipped in the bud (1a).
